About Kara Mayfield
Artist Statement
My work is inspired by nature. Mood through the use of color is fundamental in my work. I strive to convey an atmosphere of serene joy. I allow my paintings to evolve from my perception, imagination and intuition. I utilize atmosphere and ambiance to evoke tranquil emotions. Influential artists in my life are Georgia O Keefe and Vincent van Gogh, Berte Marisot, Henri Matisse, and Gustav Klimt.
Throughout my life I have felt driven by a compulsive need to create. My skills have developed through the exploration of acrylic paints, alcohol inks, and resin among others such as clay sculpture and digital art. As a self-taught artist I incorporate techniques I’ve discovered through experimentation with tools I’ve crafted and others such as drinking straws, string, bamboo skewers, hair combs, tongue depressors. In the search for balance, aura and aesthetic, I begin to work by letting my 3rd hand guide me to create a background. I like to work on several paintings at one time because the paintings need to rest. Some just for days, others for weeks. I add elements on the canvas as they tell me where they want to live. In this way the painting takes on a life of its own.
